File Extensions
Photoshop (PSD)- The original Photoshop file that saves layers, masks, effects, filters, etc.
Large Document Format (PSB)- Similar PSD file, but it’s for a larger image size. These files can be saved with up to 300,000 by 300,000 pixels.
BMP (BMP, RLE, DIB)- Also known as a bitmap file, this format is used to store digital images.
CompuServe GIF (GIF)- The Graphics Interchange Format is used to store single images with up to 256 colors for each frame. These images can be put together to create animations.
Dicom (DCM, DC3, DIC)- Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine is the system for storing and transferring information in medical imaging. This means that the file format is within a communications network with specific data protocols.
Photoshop EPS (EPS)- These photoshop files are unique because they hold page-layouts, word processing, and graphics applications. The full name for the acronym is an Encapsulated PostScript file.
Photoshop DCS 1.0 (EPS)- This Photoshop file is composed of of 5 separate file in which hold their own colors. This is used to separate colorful files into sub files of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
Photoshop DCS 2.0 (EPS)- This Photoshop file is similar to to DCS 1.0, but it’s different in that it adds the colors orange and green to the main colors of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
IFF Format (IFF, TDI)- The Interchange File Format is a generic file that is used to transfer data between software companies.
JPEG (JPG, JPEG, JPE)- This is an image file that is used for compressing and storing image files.
JPEG 2000 (JPF, JPX, JP2, J2C, J2K, JPC)- This is a more complex JPEG file that was newly designed for faster use.
PCX (PCX)- This is a graphics file format that is used for graphics programs running on PC’s

Photoshop Raw (RAW)- This is a format that contains compressed data that is a strictly encrypted digital camera file.
Pixar (PXR)- This photoshop format supports RGB and grayscale images with a single alpha channel.
PNG (PNG)-This a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. It is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet.
Portable Bit Map (PBM, PGM, PPM, PNM, PFM, PAM)- This file format setup it is designed to be easily exchanged between platforms and saved quickly.
Scitex CT (SCT)- This is an image file format that is designed specifically for use on Scitex graphics equipment.
Targa (TGA, VDA, ICB, VST)- This is a raster graphics file format created by Truevision Inc. It uses 24 bits per pixel and is a common output format for ray tracing programs
TIFF (TIF, TIFF)-This file type allows you to store images in a lossless format so that you can edit and resave images without losing image quality.
